Rounding third…and heading for home!!

Is winter over yet?! What a roller coaster mother nature has been this winter. Snowfall followed by 50 degrees, followed by more snow, followed by 40 degrees, followed by ice, followed by -40 degrees, and the same pattern over and over. You get the picture. The adverse conditions put quite a halt on outdoor projects this winter, but I still feel we will be able to chip away at the projects as the weather turns and throughout the 2019 season.

Over the winter I had a few opportunities to keep learning new ideas and techniques in the turfgrass industry. The OTF show in Columbus was amazing. Not only did I meet new people in the industry, I was able to run into old colleagues to catch up on life and pick their brains for advice. I also got to meet superintendents from the Hoosier GCSA this past week. It will be good to know others in the area, as we all face the same challenges through the season. Knowing that you have people you can bounce ideas off of really helps you stay in check. I also threw my hat into the ring and now I am a board member for the Hoosier GCSA. I’m excited to dive right into the association. I feel like it will give me a chance to grow within my career, and give me a great chance at being involved with all the courses in Northeast Indiana.

Every day I’m getting more and more antsy, just knowing that the weather is getting ready to break at some point over the next month. I’ve never been more ready and anxious to get a season going. With this being my first season at the helm, there is so much going on in my mind right now. With so much on my plate by being a new Superintendent, I feel like I have something to prove. And prove it I will!! I love this town, I love this course, and I love our golf community. Sure it’s going to be rough to get the ball rolling, but I know once we get going it is going to be smooth sailing. I’m excited for the challenge of getting the final holes complete in a timely fashion so that come June, Cross Creek Golf Club will become a 27 hole facility. Yes! Little ole’ Decatur will have a 27 hole golf course.

We are almost there people…Spring is right around the corner! Crap! Is that snow I see outside my window right now? Fight through it, one last cold spell and then we are rounding third base and heading for home! Let’s make 2019 a great year!
